http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/the_pattern_book/
The actual game is here:
http://www.rpol.net/game..cgi?gi=34136&date=1235420058
Check it out!
On a side note, I have requested entry to both groups and STILL have not yet heard back from the DM! :D Come on dude let me in!
Blessings to all! Allen R. Alderman aka WizardofOwls

Hello castlewrks! I just wanted to say that this is very cool! There are a couple of points which will have to be worked out, but once we get them fixed, I would love to make this an official part of Oramis, with your permission. I am sending you a message with some points we'll need to work on. Thanks for this! It will make a wonderful addition to Oramis!

World Explanations...

For a world whose very survival depends on magic, to believe the population has developed an aversion to mage's needs to be explained. While the premise is an interesting and challenging undertaking, this "world" violates the very mechanics of planets and world-building concepts. Magic, and very powerful magic at that, was deployed to hold the shards together and to allow life to continue on... there are a large number of normal aspects that have to be accounted for in your world design. I would propose that mages are very much sought after by powerful coalitions that need their magic and abilities to keep things together.
I highly recommend... http://www.world-builders.org/ and http://www.sfwa.org/writing/worldbuilding1.htm
Being very technical, I would like to know the answers to the following questions:
How you propose the atmosphere bubble is maintained? How big is the inside space? What happens when a shard moves too close to the outside?
If each shard has its own gravity, normal influences of bodies with gravity will apply implying some kind of "dance" of shards that needs to be engineered... How do you propose this work?
What determines "up"? There are two ways to interpret shattered... the first is to assume that it is like the Earth system asteroid belt where every shard is a world unto itself and subject to the dangers of collision, etc. The second concept is that the world is shattered but everything still points down towards the original core and the shattered pieces are like continents of Earth separated by gaps instead of oceans.
In either case, what happened to the water? How does it rain? How can crops be grown to feed people?
What you propose is very similar to Integral Trees by Larry Niven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Integral_Trees) where your shards correspond to the Integral Trees.

As far as what determines up, this is my understanding...
Up is the direction which all shards are always facing, which is also towards the sun. The shards orbit freely and randomly within the air bubble and the magic of the shard keys prevents them from colliding. As for the edge of the of the Air bubble, i believe the shards simply "bounce" off it.

I just had a thought, what if, we used the Bushido as the Dwarven code of honour. Their favoured class could be changed to samurai (Complete Warrior) and Masladh could become Ronin. For Dwarven mages, I could make a "Honour Mage" type class, as well as a Ronin equivalent.

Well, it wouldn't be Oriental, it would "borrow" elements from oriental cultures, namely Japan in this case. The Bushido could easily be given a Dwarven name and the class features of the samurai could be renamed as well.

Hey OwlWizard, what if instead of the corrupt spells being based on the race of the target, it was based on caster level. For example, a higher level caster would be able to create, say, a mind flayer rather than an orc. The spell could also be based on race and caster level. This opens up more flexibility by allowing more monsters in the world.

Istill like the sphere idea the best, I just need to decide how big it would need to be in order for all of the shards and debirs to fit comfortably (never coming closer than one mile to each other), and still have room for l12 to 2 week-long voyages by wind rigger to a shard on the other side of the sphere. Of course the easiest course would be straight through the center, but the gravity well (see below) might make that difficult.
I have pretty much decided that there is a common point in the center of the sphere and that all shards revolve around it. All shard roots point down toward that gravity-well, creating a "common down" - down is toward the center of the sphere, and up is toward the wall of the sky-sphere.... no matter which shard you are on. There might also be a "mystery" shard in the center wich might be the focal point the Gods created to project the sky-sphere. Just putting forth some brain-storming ideas...

Actually, you would not have night/day. Its magic. The sky-sphere maintains atmospheric conditions and lighting conditions within the sphere, so that no matter where you are its always light, except for nightfall conditions. Inside the sky sphere, it is basically a world to itself. What happens outside the sphere does not affect within.

I think I may go with 10,000 shards. Still undecied about the Hollow World issue. There are 7 contintent-sized fragments, which would leave 9,994 smaller shards of various sizes, then there will be some gravity-less boulders which technically aren't classified as shards, and finally there are debris fields and debris storms. The repulsion fields set up by the shard-key would keep out everything bigger than a pre-set size (ideas?), but there could still be dust/pebble storms.

So you like the 200 km diameter shard average with bigger fragments and smaller specialty shards?
Debris fields, more like debris clouds... you will have deluges of wet and potentially nasty chunks of rock. It would seem to me in the more organized shards there are special jobs to watch for signs of both these that are reported to the shard key holder such that he/she can command the shard to shift or move in order to avoid these.

this is a good creation myth. It has some of the classical elements and themes, and yet it is a new take on things. I like the weaving/fates things to explain how the universe came to be.
THough it looks like the first part of a trilogy, I would like to know what hte Unraveler is up to.
You might consider though, that they don't need a creation myth like this because their creation myth need only be concerned with how Oramis was shattered.
But, you might also consider tying in the Unraveler into the Shattering Myth. Say that one of the forces was a herald for the Unraveler, and the other was a Knight of the Three Weavers. Their battle broke the planet. (but again, don't mention that they are mages, leave them as unknown forces)

I thought we convinced you to avoid the wizard story, and rewrite it into some thing more legendary. the rest of your world looks so good. but this part just seems clunky and unpolished.
